The issue of whether flavors should be used in milk powder formulas has once again sparked heated debate. Recently, a reporter from Beijing Business Daily visited some mother and baby stores and found that the "flavors" in the product ingredient list of domestic milk powder brands have disappeared, but there is still information about flavors in foreign brand products, which caused confusion among consumers.
Although the national standard does not prohibit the addition of flavors to formula milk powder sold in China for more than two paragraphs, a Beijing Business Daily reporter conducted a questionnaire survey on the behavior of enterprises adding flavors to infant formula milk powder. The results showed that more than 80% of the respondents were opposed to the addition of flavors to infant milk powder, and believed that the current milk powder quality still needs to be further improved.
Analysts believe that with the improvement of milk powder technology, the country has also put forward higher requirements for food quality. Therefore, dairy companies cannot stick to the previous formula, but constantly improve the quality of milk powder according to changes in the consumption environment.
The survey results are mixed
A few days ago, many domestic milk powder companies issued the slogan "refuse to add flavor" and launched actions. In order to understand consumers' views on adding flavor to milk powder, Beijing Commercial Daily conducted a questionnaire survey on the behavior of enterprises adding flavor to infant formula milk powder.
According to the survey results, 51% of people do not have the habit of checking milk powder ingredients, 54% do not know the addition of flavors to milk powder, 82% are opposed to adding flavors to milk powder, 83% believe that adding flavors will affect the quality of milk powder, 91% hope to reduce the use of flavors and other additives, and 97% believe that the current milk powder products need to further improve product quality.
From the survey data, it is clear that nearly half of the people do not check the habit of milk powder ingredients and do not know that there are added flavors in milk powder, but most people still do not support the addition of flavors and other additives in milk powder, and believe that flavors will affect the quality of milk powder. They hope to reduce the use of flavors and other additives and further improve the quality of milk powder.
Regarding whether flavors are added to baby milk powder, Beijing Business Daily reporters visited supermarkets such as Wumart Supermarket and Leyou Baby Store and found that among domestic milk powder companies, products under brands such as Shengyuan, Feihe, Beingmate, Wandashan, and Jinlingguan did not find flavors in the product ingredients. However, different types of flavors are added to the 2, 3, and 4 milk powder products of foreign milk powder companies. Among them, the 2nd and 3rd segments of Wyeth Qifu contain ethyl vanillin, the 2nd segment of Wyeth S-26 Aille and the 3rd segment of S-26 Toddler's Music contain ethyl vanillin, the 4th segment of Wyeth S-26 Xuelle contains edible flavor, the 2nd and 3rd segments of Wyeth Platinum Zhen contain vanillin, and the 4th segment of Wyeth Platinum Zhen contains ethyl vanillin; the 2nd and 3rd segments of Abbott Jingzhi Pure contain ethyl vanillin, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th segments of Abbott Platinum Youemeli have ethyl vanillin, the 3rd segment of Abbott Pro Care has vanillin and ethyl vanillin, and the 4th segment of Abbott Classic Enemeli has edible flavor; the 4th segment of Royal Meisujia and Meisu of Friesland Jia'er has vanillin in the 3rd and 4th stages.
Regarding the issue of adding flavors to milk powder, the Beijing Business Daily reporter contacted the customer service of Wyeth's official website as a consumer. The customer service staff said that the addition of ethyl vanillin is to adjust the taste of the baby and prevent the occurrence of anorexia. The amount added is within the national scope and will not affect health.
In addition, in response to the issue of adding flavors to milk powder, a reporter from Beijing Business Daily interviewed the public relations department of Friesland, but as of press time, there was still no reply.
In this regard, dairy expert Song Liang believes that as a food additive, vanillin can cover up the fishy smell of milk powder and increase the sweetness of milk powder, and is not harmful to the health of babies. After the milk powder formula registration system, domestic milk powder companies gradually changed the milk powder formula to no longer add vanillin in order to improve the quality of milk powder, while foreign milk powder companies have only used the previous formula under the legal standards of our country.
